Managed app hosting vs. a raw VPS
With a VPS, you manage the server. With MoodLensAI, you manage your project. Neither is wrong — here is what actually changes between them.

A raw VPS gives you full root-level control over a blank server; MoodLensAI gives you a running application with the runtime, database, HTTPS, backups and monitoring already wired together, in exchange for some of that low-level freedom. Most application hosting does not need root access to a blank box — it needs the app running reliably.
Dimension by dimension
When A raw VPS is the better choice
- You need full root access to install arbitrary system packages or run services outside our supported frameworks and one-click apps.
- Your workload genuinely needs a fully custom, Docker-compatible environment — MoodLensAI's Isolated plan offers a dedicated VM for exactly this case, but a plain VPS from any provider works too.
- You already have the time and expertise to patch, secure and back up a server yourself, and you want that level of low-level control.
When MoodLensAI is the better choice
- You want backups, SSL and health-checked deploys configured correctly from day one, without building that yourself.
- You are deploying a supported framework (Laravel, Django, FastAPI, Next.js, Node.js, React, Vue) or a one-click app (WordPress, n8n, Umami, Uptime Kuma, AnythingLLM, Activepieces) and would rather not wire up the underlying server for it.
- You want a fixed monthly price rather than tracking your own usage and renewal dates across a VPS provider's console.
Who is responsible for what
Security & backups
MoodLensAI's isolation model, hardened container defaults and automated isolation checks are described in full on our Security page; backup scheduling and retention are described on our Backups page. A VPS gives you the same responsibility for both — securing and backing it up is entirely on you.
A note on pricing
VPS pricing varies widely by provider, region and resource size, and changes over time — compare against your own provider's current pricing page rather than a number quoted here. The real cost difference to weigh is not just the server's price tag, but the time spent setting up and maintaining the database, HTTPS, backups and monitoring yourself.
Migration path
- 1. Confirm your app matches one of our supported frameworks or one-click apps — check the frameworks list or the app catalog.
- 2. Push your application to a GitHub repository if it is not already there.
- 3. Connect the repository to MoodLensAI's Git-based deploy pipeline for a supported framework, or provision a one-click app template.
- 4. Verify the new deployment works correctly, then point your domain's DNS at it.
- 5. Once the new deployment is confirmed healthy, decommission the old VPS.
Frequently asked questions
Do I lose root access moving from a VPS to MoodLensAI?
On shared plans, yes — you get SSH access to your own deployment but not full host-level root. The Isolated plan gives you a dedicated VM if you need that level of control.
Is MoodLensAI more expensive than a cheap VPS?
The sticker price of a bare VPS is often lower, but it does not include the database, HTTPS, backups or monitoring setup — those are included in MoodLensAI's fixed monthly price.
Can I move back to a VPS later if I need to?
Yes — your application code lives in your own Git repository (or, for one-click apps, its own data volume you can export), so nothing locks you into staying.
What if my app needs something outside the supported frameworks?
Check the Isolated plan, which gives you a dedicated, Docker-compatible VM for custom workloads that do not fit a standard preset.
